Three Dairy-Free Calcium Food Options

Posted .

Did you know that calcium is important for your teeth as well as your other bones? Well, it’s true! It’s recommended that we eat 1,000-2,000 mg daily! Calcium aids in rebuilding and maintaining tooth enamel, that hard outer layer that protects the soft root of the tooth from decay and infection. To get your daily dose of calcium, many people depend upon dairy products such as cheese, milk, or yogurt.

But what if you are lactose intolerant or sensitive or for some other reason cannot eat dairy? Providentially, there are a number of other appetizing food sources to get your daily dose of calcium. Here are three to choose from

Almonds: Almonds are a lovely way to incorporate calcium into your diet. Not only do they hold 246 mg of calcium per cup, but they also have other vitamins and minerals like magnesium and vitamin E. Almonds also include fiber, protein, and healthy fats. All in all, almonds are a wonderful snacking choice.

Beans: Beans are a great way to add calcium to your diet. And, there is a wide assortment to choose from. Soybeans, for instance, pack 515 mg of calcium into just one cup! White beans have 485 mg per cup, and kidney beans have 359 mg per cup. Beans are also filled with fiber, vitamins and minerals and protein, which are excellent for your overall health–as well as a healthy smile.

Fortified Foods: Foods like tofu, orange juice, and even breakfast cereals are fortified with extra calcium. This is a good way to enjoy a multiplicity of foods while still giving your body the calcium it needs to support healthy teeth!
